Pig Information From NSW DPI

October 25, 2010 by Darren

The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) has a lot of really good pig keeping information available by way of factsheets (they call them Primefacts, Agfacts, and Agnotes).

Rather than having to hunt around their site for the relevant documents, I thought it’d be useful to link to them all in once place:

  • Responsible pig ownership – information for local councils and pig owners
  • Pigs as pets
  • Basic pig husbandry – gilts and sows
  • Basic pig husbandry – the boar
  • Basic pig husbandry – the litter
  • Basic pig husbandry – the weaner
  • Basic pig husbandry – grower herd
  • Breed of pigs – Duroc
  • Breed of pigs – Landrace
  • Breed of pigs – Large White
  • Moving pigs into and within NSW
  • Deep-litter housing for pigs
  • Pig branding in NSW
  • Buying feed at the right price
  • A bin for storing horse feeds (also suitable for pig feed!)
  • Swill feeding
  • Recycled cooking oils – their use in pig feed
  • Dangers in feeding waste material to livestock
  • Pig vaccination programs
  • Water medication for pigs
  • Recognising exotic diseases of pigs
  • Swine influenza
  • Brucellosis in pigs
  • Biosecurity guidelines for pig exhibits
  • Captive bolt euthanasia of pigs
  • Understanding the pork industry
  • Selling pigs – NLIS pork
  • Pork – cost of production
  • Batch farrowing for the pig industry
  • Guidelines for group-housing pregnant sows
  • Alternative farrowing accommodation in the pork industry

There is also a bunch of useful news, information and resources on their Pork Production Team page.

There are a lot of government departments around the world who provide information like this, but these are specifically useful to pig keepers in NSW Australia. They will keep you up to date on the Australian industry, new developments, changes to laws and regulations, and disease outbreaks.

Similar information for other Australian states can be found here:

  • Queensland
  • Victoria
  • South Australia
  • Western Australia
  • Tasmania (also Pigs And The Smallholder)

If you know of similar resources for other countries, please link to them below!
