Jamberoo Community Growers Meeting – Backyard Aquaponics

28 January 2011 No Comment
February 6, 2011
2:00 pmto4:00 pm

Our first Jamberoo Community Growers meeting for 2011 will be on Sunday 6th February, 2:00 – 4:00 pm, in the Jamberoo Anglican Church hall (next door to Jamberoo Primary School).

The speaker at this meeting will be John Burgess from Fresh By Nature, a Gerringong-based business providing aquaponics systems, supplies, fish stock & feed, and advice.

Aquaponics combines hydroponic growing techniques with aquaculture (raising fish) to provide a closed-loop food production system. Water from the fish tanks is pumped through the vegetable growing beds – fish waste becomes nutrient for the plants in the grow beds, which filter and purify the water that is returned to the fish tanks.

To whet your appetite, you can watch a brief Television Sydney segment filmed in John’s backyard for the Living On The Coast series:

As always, please bring along your surplus produce, seedlings, cuttings, flowers, gardening magazines, etc for the swap table.

For February planting advice, refer to this Gardenate page.
