Although the “cap and trade” idea behind Rudd’s ETS scheme is a workable way to make progress on carbon emissions, the system that’s being put in place is less than ideal.

The basic idea is that the government sets a cap on the total pollution the country will emit. People or businesses who are able to significantly cut their emissions will then be able to sell their emission certificates to industries who can’t (or won’t). The law of supply and demand will determine the price of the certificates.

We did an interview and some photos with Paul from Wollongong Council for Sustainable Illawarra today.

Paul is going around and gathering stories from about 25 different households, putting together some case studies and other materials for the Sustainable Illawarra project. Maybe we’ll end up on their web site, or possibly in a booklet or something to help promote this kind of project to other Councils.

While we were at the Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge launch last night, Ally (one of the Super Challenge coordinators) and her partner Richard were simultaneously appearing on Triple J’s Hack Half Hour on ABC2.
