I was interviewed by Gavin Webber from The Greening Of Gavin as part of a series of podcasts he’s done with sustainable bloggers from around Australia. Let me know what you think!

Kiamasphere Web Site Launch

I was fortunate enough to be invited to speak at the launch of Kiama Council’s new Kiamasphere web site on Thursday.

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’ll probably know that our sustainability journey really got going when my family joined the Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge. It gave us the impetus to stop thinking and start acting on the changes we wanted to make.

The Sustainable Illawarra web site contains a lot of valuable information and resources to help people learn more about living sustainably in the Illawarra region. …

A little while ago I mentioned that I was interviewed for a podcast by Tim Denshire-Key.

Tim is a student from RMIT who has been travelling around Australia, checking out sustainability initiatives and interviewing people. He’s finally back home and working his way through the 50+ interviews he recorded. What a huge job!

Well, my turn has come and my interview has been posted.

I think Tim has done a pretty good job of editing my hour-plus of guff and waffle down to a tight 10-minute recording.

Please let me know what you think!

Welcome Super Challengers!

I spoke at the launch of the Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge Round 2 today at the Dapto Ribbonwood Center. Sorry guys if I rambled too much :-).

It was a great session, with beautiful food and lots of local families to meet. I was pleased to see a nice strong Kiama contingent! It was great to see lots of young families involved too. Once again backyard vegie gardens came out on top as the most popular goal households had set.

Now we just have to get Mr Rudd onboard.

Yesterday’s Kiama Library Living …

The Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge, the program that started us working on being more sustainable (and which led to the creation of this blog!), is calling for 50 new participants for Round 2 (scroll down a little on that page and you’ll see a photo of us!).

Although the name sounds like an eco version of It’s A Knockout, it’s really nothing like that. It’s not a competition, and you are only challenging yourself to live more sustainably.

The Sustainable Illawarra team will support the Super Challenge households to achieve the sustainability …

Yesterday I met up with Tim Denshire-Key at Wollongong University, and he interviewed me about our participation in the Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge and our efforts to become more sustainable in an ordinary suburban house. He’ll use the audio in an upcoming podcast.

Tim is studying Industrial Design at RMIT in Melbourne, and is currently undertaking a sustainability study tour of Australia. It sounds like a hoot – he’s travelling around checking out projects relating to sustainable design and living, renewable energy and water. He’s blogging about the journey at Up …

On Sunday I drove up to the Wollongong Wholesale Nursery at Albion Park Rail to buy some fruit trees with my Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge vouchers. The staff there were really helpful, and gave me some good ideas for the types of trees that would suit our needs for the front yard.

I pretty much already knew what I wanted for the main planting areas, but we had three large planters Megan bought at the Magnet Mart closing down sale. We wanted to use them to screen our view of the …

If you’re one of the families in the Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge and you chose vouchers as part of your incentive package, make sure you check the use-by dates on them.

I got vouchers for Cosmo Lighting and Wollongong Wholesale Nursery, and they are both valid only until the end of January.

So get out there and spend them! Don’t let them expire!

We did an interview and some photos with Paul from Wollongong Council for Sustainable Illawarra today.

Paul is going around and gathering stories from about 25 different households, putting together some case studies and other materials for the Sustainable Illawarra project. Maybe we’ll end up on their web site, or possibly in a booklet or something to help promote this kind of project to other Councils.

It was great chatting to Paul as I showed him around. He’s got solar power at his house in Port Kembla, plus chooks, vegies, etc so …

Last night was the official launch event of the Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge, the programme that prompted the start of this blog.

It was a great turnout, with most of the 120 or so families participating in the Challenge represented. I was excited to see a few familiar faces – people I hadn’t seen for a while and had no idea they were participating. It’ll be great to catch up with them and perhaps work with each other over the next 12 months.

I also met a lot of new people. Christine …
