Sometimes it takes me a while to get around to writing up these entries – last weekend I attended my first Illawarra Seedsavers meeting, and it was great.

There were about 10 people at the meeting. Being my first, I didn’t know what to expect, but the other people were all very friendly and welcoming. They’d [...]

If you’re into home gardening, don’t forget the SeedSavers meeting this afternoon at Dapto, from 3:00 – 4:00 pm.

I’ll be there!

This is another workshop I’d have loved to attend, but unfortunately I can’t make it. It would be really useful, given our current efforts to reduce our high electricity consumption!

Learn which parts of your house consume the most energy and the [...]

I’m really looking forward to the solar hot water information night on Friday. I’m hoping to find out whether it is possible to retrofit some kind of solar heating (or at least boosting) to my off-peak electric hot water system. It’s in good condition and it seems wasteful (and expensive!) to get rid of it [...]

On Saturday, I took our two youngest girls to the Glengarry Cottage Gala Day.

They had talks and tours running throughout the day on stuff like permaculture gardening, composting, worm farming, etc. There were also some stalls, selling/displaying things like compost bins, worm farms, bags of compost, seedlings, etc. Sustainable Illawarra had a stall there as [...]

The Sustainable Illawarra event calendar for November 2008 is now available.

There are some very cool sounding workshops, including cheesemaking, gardening, backyard chook-keeping and water wise gardening. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to a few!

Last night was the official launch event of the Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge, the programme that prompted the start of this blog.

It was a great turnout, with most of the 120 or so families participating in the Challenge represented. I was excited to see a few familiar faces – people I hadn’t seen for a [...]

This afternoon I attended Kiama Council’s Composting Workshop, held at the Girl Guides’ Hall down in Hindmarsh Park. It was run by Josephine St John, council’s Waste Minimisation Officer.

What a great event!

I had really thought I wouldn’t learn much from this workshop, but I thought it was a good opportunity to meet some interesting people [...]

I didn’t realise it until we signed up for the Sustainable Illawarra Super Challenge, but our local councils and other organisations put on quite a lot of free and low-cost workshops, talks, demonstrations, tours and other events. Just have a look at Sustainable Illawarra’s What’s On page to get an idea.

In the spirit of this [...]
